Chihuahua Dry Skin

Chihuahua with dry skin

Chihuahua has Dry Skin

Your Chihuahua has dry skin and you may have not even realized it until your trip to the vet. There might have been some some flaking, and your pet may have been licking or scratching a little, but nothing serious.

Your Vet and other people are recommending fish oil, and that is a great solution to a general symptom of dry skin. (If You want to read more about other types of itchy dry skin problems in dogs click here.)

Why fish oil?

Fish oil has Omega 3, and specifically, fish oil has the omega 3 fatty acids known as EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). These two fatty acids are easily metabolized by cats and dogs and they help reduce inflammation.

Fish Oil from Cod or Salmon have high levels of Omega 3 fatty acids and so are very effective in calming highly reactive skin and making the skin and coat of small dogs and cats, healthier and the fur glossier. The extra benefit of Fish Oil is that it’s also good for the heart, and also helps to reduce inflammation from Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Omega 3 from fish oil is not like Omega 3 from Flax or other plant sources like Olive or Coconut. These plant sources have ALA as the long chain fatty acids and since dogs and cats are meat eaters (and cats being obligate carnivores) their bodies cannot make the conversion so the plant source Omega 3′s usually do not do any good.

Where To Find a Small Pet Omega 3

If you have been looking around at Fish Oil products, you are probably finding that either you need to deal with liquid fish oil or the fish oil capsules that are sold to the small dog and cat market are really too big. Your small dog of about 10 lbs or less cannot swallow these fish oil capsules. You are advised to cut them and use only half. That seems like a lot of fussing and a waste.

Your small dog should really be only taking between 100 to 200 grams of the Omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA.  If they take more, they can have bowel problems like diarrhea or gas, because the concentration of the fatty acids is too rich for smaller digestive tracts.

Where do you find the right sized pill for your small dog? Fortunately you found this site and we specialize in a very small Omega 3 for cats, small dogs and puppies. It’s the Packenzie Petite Omega 3 Softgel™.

It’s recommended for dogs 10 lbs and under, ( though we have been using it on our 15 lb cat once a day for 2 years and he is doing very well with it – and this cat has a very expensive Vet bill riding on the success of his Omega 3 regimen.)

The combined fatty acids are 100 mg of EPA and DHA, and it comes in a 500 mg oval capsule that is very smooth. It’s half the size of the other Pet Omega 3′s on the market. Since the capsule is smaller and smooth, it’s very easy for small dogs to take. The contents are 100% pure premium salmon oil  - all USA product and manufacturing. There is nothing else in the ingredients except for the gelatin formula for the softgel shell.

Easy for Small Dogs

We have found that small dogs usually have no problem taking this small oval capsule without having to disguise it or do anything. Just toss the Packenzie Petite Omega 3 to your pet and they should gobble it down within about 5-15 seconds. Or just put it in their food bowl when they get their meal and they usually eat it without thinking about it – most think it’s a treat.

Cats on the other hand are more of a challenge (as you can imagine). We manually pill our cat, so we know it can be swallowed. Some owners have been successful with disguising it in food, or a Greenies Pill Pocket, or they end up cutting it and dispensing over their food.
